Tulsi das went to meet Delhi darbar (king of Delhi) after having Sri Rama direct dharshan (vision of god) in Gokula (birth place of Sri Krishna). The king desired to have dharsan of Sri Rama and forced Tulsi das to show Sri Rama to him. When Tulsi Das replied saying which is not possible unless having pure devotion on Him (Sri Rama), Tulsi das was prisoned by the king. In the prison, Tulsi das wrote this beautiful verses of Hanuman Chalisa on Sri Hanuman. While he completes the Hanuman Chalisa in prison, it is said that there were full of Monkeys like an army occupied Delhi. The king tried to control the Monkeys with many forces but could not since the numbers were huge. Finally, the king understood it was due to his mistake of putting Tulsi Da in prison without understanding his devotion on Sri Rama. He released Tulsi Das and prayed him to set off the Monkeys and then it is said that the country turned normal. This is the background story of Hanuman Chalisa. In that Hanuman chalisa, it is said by Tulsi Das that the person who is chanting this will get the grace of Sri Hanuman.
